How many times have you purchased a items while engaging in non purchase related conversations with the sales person. The more engrossed the two of you become in the conversation, the less attention either of you pay to what’s going on.
On more than one occasion, I’ve come out of a store, looked at the receipt only to find that something is missing from the bag, or I was charged twice for an item or on the very rare occasion, not charged for an item at all.
Exchanging pleasantries makes the shopping experience all the more enjoyable. However, be mindful to keep the conversation light or you may end up taking a second trip to the store to straighten out a payment/item discrepancy. If you truly want to have a conversation, put it on hold until the items are properly scanned and paid for.
