I’d be remiss if I didn’t mention homemade laundry detergent on this blog. After all, it’s a blog about saving money.
A Little Math Please
Take a little time and calculate how much your current laundry detergent costs you per load. I’ll take a guess and say that it costs you anywhere from 15 to 25 cents per load. That doesn’t sound like too much does it?
What would you say if I told you that you could wash anywhere from 5 to 25 loads of wash for the very same 15 to 25 cents? Hmmm, now the cost of your laundry detergent seems rather steep doesn’t it?
Homemade Laundry Detergent
I know for a fact that homemade laundry detergent not only works, but costs a fraction of what you’re currently paying for commercial laundry detergent. Don’t take my word for it, try it for yourself.
I’m not going to re-post the recipe for homemade laundry detergent here because I’ve written the recipe a time or two so I’ll link to it instead. Here’s the link to the homemade liquid laundry detergent (which will cost you less than a penny per laundry load) and here’s the link for the powdered laundry detergent (which will cost you about 3.5 cents per load). Both recipes work very well in front loading high efficiency washing
machines.
In case you’re skeptical and wonder if the homemade laundry detergent really works, here’s the link to my observations after 1 year of using homemade laundry detergent exclusively.
Getting the Same Thing Done for Less
If you’re looking to save money and make your hard-earned dollar stretch, you must try making your own laundry detergent. Even if you only use it for every other load of dirty clothes, you’ll save a bundle.

Thank you for sharing these recipes. I’m going to give these a try. I developed eczema a few years ago and had to switch my laundry detergent brand to get one that is free of dyes and perfumes. While this has helped my eczema, it has cost me a little more money since I can’t shop for deals or use coupons for other brands.
Where do you recommend getting a 5 gallon container from? I imagine that I’d need a container with a lid, since I suspect the soap could dry out. Is that a correct assumption?
Hey Tiffany,
We happened to have 5 gallon containers that we bought from Home Depot for home improvement projects. They don’t have lids but that’s okay. I ended up pouring the liquid mixture into smaller containers. It’s a lot easier to handle the detergent that way.
I use old juice jars, pickle jars and whatever else I have in my recycle bin.
Felicia,
Great idea! I’ll start looking around and containers I can save for storage. I’ll probably have to go out and buy a bucket or something to mix the soap in though.
